Successful launch of the Antares launch vehicle took place on November 17, 2018, at 11:01 Kyiv time (4:01 a.m. Eastern) from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport on Wallops Island (Virginia, the United States).
American Northrop Grumman Corporation is the prime developer of the launch vehicle. Antares LV launched into orbit Cygnus cargo spacecraft delivering about 3,450 kg of payload to the International Space Station, supplies of food, materials for scientific researches, scientific equipment to the ISS, computers, and components. Spacecraft docking to ISS is scheduled for November 19th.
Their mission cargo spacecraft Cygnus CRS NG-10 S.S. John Young Northrop Grumman Corporation named after the former NASA astronaut John Young, who carried out six space flights (including the first manned flight on Gemini spacecraft, the second flight to the lunar orbit at the Apollo 10 spacecraft, the fifth moon expedition at the Apollo 16 spacecraft, the first flight at the Space Shuttle space transport system), one of the 12 astronauts landed on the moon, director of the NASA Astronaut Division in 1974-1987, Assistant Director and Technical. Director of the Johnson Space Center in 1987-2004, a person who gave NASA 42 years of his life.
The main structure of the Antares’ first stage was developed by Yuzhnoye State Design Office and produced by SE PA PMZ in cooperation with Ukraine’s Hartron-ARKOS (Kharkiv), Hartron-Ucom (Zaporizhzhia), Chezara, Rapid (Chernihiv), and Kyivprylad (Kyiv), etc.
Antares pre-launch processing, testing, and launch were supported by the Ukrainian specialists, who have accomplished all respective operations in their areas of responsibility. Launch technical support, real-time acquisition, and processing of the telemetry information were provided from the Yuzhnoye SDO territory as stipulated by the contract.
This mission was Antares’ ninth launch of the Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems company (formerly Orbital ATK), under the contract NASA. The next launch is scheduled for April 2019.
Under the Antares program, Ukrainian party has accomplished all design, test, and hardware
production liabilities undertaken under the contract with National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
Antares project is a good example of the
Ukrainian space industry involvement in the international space projects, promoting its foreign economic activity and involvement of the national
spacefaring industry in the global space market.
